When I would write a song I could hear the entire composition in my head and it was frustrating because I wanted to share that and not just pluck it out in a two dimensional version on guitar. Playing an instrument was a necessary evil to me at first. Phrases have melodies. Words have tones. Life is music. Songwriting is a way to express life and the music naturally follows. Music is not my life. There was always a guitar around when I was growing up but I would have loved to play the piano earlier. I learned to play guitar when I was 13.
