[Many of the songs left over from the demo sessions were eventually rewritten and rerecorded for 'The Distance' (2007); a friend of Rankin's facetiously warned him had he waited much longer to release the EP it may have turned into a mere single.] Ironically, 'Cages of Fire' roughly remains Rankin's best-selling disc to date on iTunes and most other digital retailers.On his sophomore effort, Rankin takes the sound of 'Every Part of Me' and cranks it up several (thousand) notches. What started out as a conceptual double album at the end of 2004 -- when Rankin began recording the follow-up to his debut 'Every Part of Me' -- became this taut collection of six tracks. The production is big and atmospheric, with histrionic keyboard pads and strings, heavily effected guitars, and Bruce Fairburn-inspired drums (no samples used, mind you); most tracks feel as if they belong in an action movie soundtrack.
