If anything, drummer Sean Noonan (who also drives THE HUB) and guitarist Aram Bajakian have the lion's share of their rhizomes planted firmly in the neophilic neighborhood also occupied by John Zorn, Ruins, Fred Frith, and Cul de Sac. Audio Mixers: Aram Bajakian; Scud Noonan.

Understand one thing: Despite the retro-sounding handle, CHIPS are anything but an Eighties nostalgia act. Granted, there might be a few traces of no wave in the duo's musical DNA, as their eponymous innova debut would seem to indicate, but the same could be said of surf music, bebop, and Armenian folk melodies, to name but a few of the tactical options these young men wield so wildly and so well. It's a sunny grove (except when it storms), where jazz, rock, and all kinds of experimentation converge freely and openly-without shame, fear, or the threat of a bad hangover.

The avant-garde sax/bass/drums trio does cover a wide palette of genres, they only do so on a track-by-track basis. The same thing applies to the trashy "Trucker," the funky "Burn It Down," and the jazzy "Gypsy." The first three pieces of this disc strongly recall Seth Misterka's trio projects from the same year (2002), like The Demon and Dynasty, with their punkish funk, riff-heavy distorted electric bass, and screaming alto sax. Trucker is advertised as an amalgam of punk, new wave, metal, funk, and free-form jazz improv. Each tune has its left-field passages, but once "2991" displays its disco vamp sound, it sticks to it. There is a renegade attitude in the music, but no real meeting between these styles.
