Videotaped and recorded at the Java Jazz Festival 2009Jakarta, Indonesia Performing at the Java Jazz Festival has been one of the high points of my recent concert touring life...and even more so, because it came as a kind of surprise gift from a chance encounter I had with festival producers Peter Gontha and Paul Dankemeyer. I'd been performing as a guest artist at saxophonist Michael Paulo's annual event in southern California when I was reintroduced to both Peter & Paul, who were attending the event. After reacquainting ourselves (actually I'd met them 20 years earlier in Jakarta when Special EFX opened the show for Spyro Gyra, when we were a relatively new act!) we mutually expressed the desire to work together at the upcoming Java Jazz event. The reunion led directly to the Chieli Minucci & Special EFX concert at Java Jazz 2009, a real successful performance for a wonderfully enthusiastic crowd. The Java event is BIG! There were more than a dozen stages going simultaneously, with a multitude of musical styles being performed by a fantastic group of international artists. The concert itself was amazingly uplifting for us, and our audience! But it was the infamous 'hang' at the hotel dining room that I will remember the most. There were dozens of old friends and new artist acquaintances, all mingling together over good food. We were all halfway across the world (we're from New York City), telling stories, sharing adventures about family, life, music and art. What could be better? There's something to be very grateful about in the world of traveling musicians! I will keep coming back for more.... Thank you Java Jazz!
