Barbara Sutton-Curtis discography The younger sister of the great stride pianist Ralph Sutton, Barbara Sutton Curtis is a fine pianist herself. Her style is gentler than her brother's and a bit more melodic, as shown on this set of unaccompanied solos recorded live in 1987 and 1993. The relaxed set features Curtis playing five two-song medleys and 11 other songs, mostly of swing-era vintage. Highlights include "My Fate Is in Your Hands," "No Moon at All," "Looking at You," the boogie-woogie "Blues on the Downbeat," and a medley of "Emaline" and "He Loves and She Loves." ~ Scott Yanow 16 solo piano pieces from 1987; here she performs standards learned from older brother Ralph Sutton - elements of his style can be found in her playing Recording information: Cafe Des Copains, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (11/18/1987/10/27/1993); Montreal Bistro (11/18/1987/10/27/1993). Barbara Sutton-Curtis songs Recorded in Toronto's Café de Copains in 1988-1989 and at the Kurtheater in Baden, Switzerland in November 1991, Solos & Duets is arguably the best album ever realized by pianist Barbara Sutton-Curtis. Both Suttons specialized in the Fats Waller book. Five delectable Waller tunes, including the rare and seldom heard "Oriental Tones" and "Why Am I Alone," are bundled with such attractive melodies as James P. Johnson's "A-Flat Dream," Jay McShann's "Hootie Blues," Bix Beiderbecke's "Davenport Blues," W.C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues," and Joe Greene's "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying." In terms of song selection and interpretive brilliance, this is a major triumph for the Suttons and ...

Barbara Sutton-Curtis CD discography This CD may very well contain the final recordings by Ralph Sutton, who died just over a year after these concerts in St. Louis, which included a rare opportunity to record with his sister, Barbara Sutton Curtis. Eight of the numbers feature the twin pianists, fueled by bassist Keter Betts and drummer Frank Capp. Appropriately enough, a hard-driving "St. Louis Blues" is the potent introduction. The quartet also glides through a lightly swinging "On the Sunny Side of the Street," a very playful "Ain't Misbehavin'" (complete with the all too often omitted ...
