Absentee CD discography Absentee cut way back on the country-rock on their second album, Victory Shorts. What they don't scale back is the mordant wit of singer Dan Michaelson's lyrics, the band's raucous approach, the size and strength of the hooks, and -- best of all -- Michaelson's amazing voice. He has one of the deeper voices you're likely ...

Like Rasputin Like Rasputin CD (2005)
CD $10.19 Buy It  Details
Absentee albums Christopher Francis plays microphones and mechanical objects. In public he plays the role of the crooner and has been known to stomp madly; this is certainly a compelling embellishment. This CD called Like Rasputin was made as a motion of closure. Absentee then died away and became Son. People say: "His passion is equal to Jeff Buckley and ...

Absentee discography The Absentee has been playing LA spots since the turn of the century...okay, call it two years. Originally billed as "Astronomer", then "Aurelius", the band has appeared locally at the Whisky, the Troubadour, Club Lush, Ground, Zero, CIA, the Equator and points east and west, always to sell-out crowds (not the same thing as crowds that ...

Absentee songs Absentee cut way back on the country-rock on their second album, Victory Shorts. What they don't scale back is the mordant wit of singer Dan Michaelson's lyrics, the band's raucous approach, the size and strength of the hooks, and -- best of all -- Michaelson's amazing voice. He has one of the deeper voices you're likely to hear outside of doo wop or opera; he sounds sort of like a steadier Johnny Cash or a way steadier Calvin Johnson. Mostly, though, he just sounds pretty great as he staggers through the ballads like a heartsick, slightly drunken fool and romps through the rockers with an amazingly light touch. Hearing him navigate the humorously choppy waters of "Bitchstealer" is alone worth the price of purchase; the depths of sadness he plumbs on slow tracks like "We Smash Plates" and "Love Has Had Its Way" is enough to take your breath away. The album itself is split between these two extremes. On the one hand are the uptempo rockers like "Bitchstealer," "Pips," and "Boy, Did She Teach You Nothing?," which are very '90s-influenced and very Pavementy (if Pavement were verse-chorus types), and feature some very pleasantly squalling guitars courtesy of Michaelson and Babak Ganjei. They're the kind of songs you'll find yourself singing along to instantly and for weeks after first ...

Absentee CD discography Debut full-length from Brit indie-country-rock quintet follows up their 2005 'Donkey Stock' mini-album. Spinning folky tales of love, loss and elegant debauchery over a backdrop of steel guitar, keyboards, harmonica, sweet backing vocals and the occasional stab of distortion, they have already been compared to Pavement and Tindersticks and secured a slot at 2005's cult Green Man Festival. Memphis. 2006. Personnel: Jon Chandler (drums). Recording information: The Premises Studio, Bethnal Green.
