Lilies CD (2004)
Arovane music CDs Four years after the last proper Arovane album -- a collaboration with Phonem and a compilation of previously 12"-only material intervened -- Lilies will also allegedly be followed by another stretch of relative inactivity for producer Uwe Zahn. Just as 2000's Tides followed a trip to France, Lilies was made after some time spent in Japan, though there isn't a whole lot of evidence of that; excepting a few slight samples and one contribution from vocalist Kazumi, the album is very much a continuation of Tides, with many of the same motifs present (fluttering harpsichords, tingling hi-hats, soft-smear strings, fine keyboard patterns). Bursting with florescent melodies propelled by creative beat-making, these nine tracks (in a very tight, digestible 37 minutes) reaffirm that, despite Zahn's beginnings as a follower and scores of nondescript peers working in roughly the same field, the producer has carved out a sound of his own -- one that's as discernible as Boards of Canada's oft-filched (but never successfully cloned) take on downtempo IDM. The worst aspect of Zahn's period of silence might not be the silence itself, but the inevitable crop of laptop producers who will attempt -- and fail -- to ...

Aer CD (2001)
Arovane discography Although never quite reaching the somnolent splendor of Arovane's 2000 benchmark, Tides, this collaborative effort between Uwe Zahn (Arovane) and Eliot Perkins (Phonem) is an admirable compromise of subtle, evolving melody and digitally distorted rhythm. By breathlessly incorporating elements of glitch-hop, ambient, and techno, the duo has fashioned something simultaneously restless and unswerving in nature. With its flittering beats and nascent melodic washes, third track (and album centerpiece) "Valid Fard" is a glowing standout; unfortunately, AER (Valid) isn't always this inspired. Overlong album closers "Suffer" and "Decay" are bogged down by a surprising lack of ...

Tides CD (2000)
Arovane songs In a time when debut films, plays, or novels are seen as the sole make-or-break factor in an artist's career, one should still never underestimate a creative force that truly doesn't come into its own until at least the second time around. This is why Arovane's Tides should be a testament to waiting to see how something develops rather than letting it all fade away too soon. It is -- surprisingly -- a lovely, lilting album of electronic class. Few people could have predicted the quantum leap of quality between the debut and this release. ...

Icol Diston CD (2002)
Arovane CD discography Released in 2002, Icol Diston compiles three of Arovane's early 12" records previously unavailable on CD: Parf (Din, 1998), Icol Diston (Din, 1998), and AMX (Din, 1999). Though this early work isn't nearly as developed as what would appear a bit later on Atol Scrap and Tides, it certainly should interest the many listeners who marveled at those albums. Plus, it's nice to have these recordings compiled on one CD for anyone not interested in seeking out vinyl EPs. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Atol Scrap CD (2000)
Arovane albums Arovane's perfected blend of crunchy beatcraft and slightly bruised music-box melodies brought young producer Uwe Zahn instant acclaim. ATOL SCRAP follows several excellent vinyl EPs released via the usual Berlin underground channels, marking Zahn's full-length debut, and his first digital document. The appealing Arovane formula can be summed up as state-of-the-art electronica reacquainted with its sensitive side.
Synthesized bells ring out volleys of teardrop twinkles and lapping waves of melody, while basslines bubble invitingly and interlocking mechanized rhythms subtly gnash and scrape. Such sighs of naked beauty as "Ambelio," "R/elet," "Failed," and "Tascel_7" could be a ...
