Although pianist Reuben Brown (who doubles on electric piano) is the leader of this set (originally recorded for Adelphi and reissued on CD by Genes), its main significance is that this was the second recording by altoist Richie Cole. Cole, who is also joined by bassist Marshall Hawkins and drummer Bernard Sweetney, dominates the music; the last two numbers ("Tokyo Rose Sings the Blues" and "Lucy & Desi") would later be remade by his Alto Madness group. Even this early in his career, Cole was a hyper bebopper and his playing (particularly on such numbers as "Starburst" and "Confirmation") is quite recognizable and typically humorous. ~ Scott Yanow high energy be-bop sax by Mr. "Alto Madness" w. Impressions Impressions CD (1983)
CD $18.89 Buy It  Details
Reuben Brown albums Recorded live at the Northsea Jazz Festival, The Hague, Holland on July 10-12, 1981. Buck Hill, a fine tenor saxophonist, had a day job for years as a mailman in the Washington, D.C., area. It was not until he was 50 in 1978 that he had his first opportunity to lead his own record date. This particular LP, recorded at the same Northsea Jazz Festival that had already resulted in Easy to Love, features Hill in 1981 leading a quartet also including pianist Reuben Brown, bassist Wilbur Little, and drummer Billy Hart. Hill, who has a thick tone and a bop-based style, stretches out on "Alone Together," "Yesterdays," "Impressions," and Brown's "Penn Station." The solos of Hill and Brown are excellent if not overly memorable, and the results are pleasing and swinging while being a little explorative in spots. ~ Scott Yanow Buck Hill Quartet: Buck Hill (tenor saxophone); Reuben Brown (piano); Wilbur Little (bass); Billy Hart (drums). Personnel: Buck Hill (tenor saxophone); Reuben Brown (piano); Billy Hart (drums). Recording information: Northsea Jazz Festival, The Hague, The Netherlands (07/10/1981-07/12/1981). Slanted Slanted CD (1993)

Reuben Brown CD discography Tenor saxophonist Ron Holloway's first album for Milestone as a leader, 1994's Slanted, sounds like the man is so busy paying tribute to his heroes that his own prodigious gifts are largely ignored. Holloway is a gifted player with a wide range of influences; his CV includes stints with both the revolutionary jazz poet Gil Scott-Heron and the garish funk-rock of Root Boy Slim & the Sex Change Band. (Yes, that's him honking away on "Boogie Til You Puke" and "Dare to Be Fat.") On Slanted, however, that wide range sounds at times more like a facile talent for mimicry. On the opening version of "Caravan," Holloway's solos seem to ...
