Dance Away the Terror Dance Away the Terror CD (2006)
CD $13.99 Buy It  Details
Capitol Years music CDs The 1960s-obsessed indie popsters the Capitol Years turn in some of their finest material on 2006'S DANCE AWAY THE TERROR. With overt nods to late-period Beatles and Big Star, and clear sympathies with contemporaries like the Shins, the Capitol Years leave behind some of the crunchy garage aesthetic of their past work in favor of chiming guitars and lush, high-flying harmonies. The results are thoroughly enjoyable, thanks mostly to lead singer and songwriter Shai Halperin's grasp of irresistibly hooky popcraft. ...

Capitol Years discography The Capitol Years have always essentially been frontman Shai Halperin's solo project. His lo-fi, pop underground nuggets have been lauded by home recording aficionados and critics alike, resulting in a string of hastily assembled releases that -- while undeniably delicious -- have never really worked as a whole. From the very beginning, Let Them Drink lays that notion to waste, relying on a cohesive blend of intelligent '60s rock and power pop that sounds like an extension of New Pornographer A.C. Newman's Slow Wonder as played by Cheap Trick. The band is tight -- the Capitol Years did open for the reunited Pixies -- and the songs are just ramshackle enough to demand the extra attention that they need to sink in. "Juicers," with its infectious and pulsating chorus, is the perfect opener; it's catchy enough to get its barbs in and opaque enough to keep the listener looking around the corner for the next hook. "Solid Gold" is like a Sloan sandwich with Neil Young in the middle, "Lucky" is all White Stripes without the attitude, and the glorious title cut is the best track that Minus 5 never recorded. It may be impossible to fully extract the Capitol Years themselves from the genre in which they'll inevitably be placed in -- garage rock revival -- but as far as smart, hook-filled songcraft goes, Let Them Drink is up there with the best that the scene has to offer. ~ James Christopher Monger The Capitol Years: Shai, Son Of Eli, Jeff Van Newkirk (vocals, guitar); Dave Wayne Daniels (vocals, bass guitar); Sir Kyle Lord (drums).

Capitol Years CD discography The one thing that Shai Halperin wants to do is rock out and rock out like it's nobody's business, without being tagged another garage rock reinventor. He and his Capitol Years project are a full-fledged band this time around, and this little gem showcases Halperin's dreams of making raw rock & roll. From the dirty blues-rock of "Jet Black," to the jaunty indie-tailored "Lucky Strike," the Jewelry Store EP is polished in style and eager in ambition, and Capitol Years maintain a pop sensibility unlike the slick presentation from the likes of the Strokes and the Vines. There's much more of a homegrown spirit from these Philly natives compared to the New York lot, and the knee-slappin' good time of "River Raid" and "Train Race" highlight that alone. Halperin & co. are finally onto something. ~ MacKenzie Wilson Recorded at Miner Street Cycle Sound Studios, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania between April & May 2002.
