Musique Iranienne: Iranian Music For Zarb & Santur CD
Djamchid Chemirani music CDs A relatively small, but still impressive, album showcasing the classical tradition of Iranian music. The players featured here are certainly masters of their respective instruments (and Majid Kiani, at least, can be found on multiple other albums in the West). The liner notes are thorough in information and brief in length in their descriptions of the dastgah systems of the tradition. The first work is an improvisation on the zarb (known more vernacularly as the doumbek), the single classical percussion instrument of Persian music. The next work is an improvisation in the Segah dastgah mode by Majid Kiani on the extensive santour (a zither). Following this is a work for the tar, a lute from the area (not to be confused with the other tar, a generally non-classical frame drum from other parts of the Middle East). Overall, a worthwhile listen for interested souls. As with much classical music, Western and otherwise, the pieces can be somewhat lengthy for a light episode of listening, but despite this, one should at least make an attempt at it to experience the music. ~ Adam Greenberg

Face To Face: Live At Jazzfest Berlin '99 CD (2006)
Djamchid Chemirani CD discography AACM saxophonist Chico Freeman, who blew everyone away in the '70s with albums like Kings of Mali and Beyond the Rain, has produced a substantial body of recorded works over the years while devoting much of his time and energy to the highly demanding art of education. His appearance at Jazzfest Berlin 1999 in humble collaboration with Swiss trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti and Reto Weber's Percussion Orchestra was preserved and presented to the public by Double Moon Records in 2006. In addition to Weber, the multi-national troupe consisted of Muthuswamy Balasubramoniam, who played mridangam, Mustapha Tettey Addy on African percussion, and Djamchid Chemirani, who specializes in the Zarb, a Persian frame drum also known as the Tombak. The creative and cultural scope of this album is in keeping with Freeman's life-long devotion to musical traditions both old and new that transcend both cultural and national boundaries. ~ arwulf arwulf
