||Pigeon Post CD (2002) |
Naomi Chiaki CD discography Release number one for Oh!Tonito isn't the usual indie pop found on parent label Darla, and the second release from rock & rollers the Snitches has already shown the subsidiary's diversity. Going by the names of Kunugi Manabu (tenor sax), Cal (guitar), Peter (bass), and Naomi (drums), this Japanese quartet plays free-form jazz with electronic manipulations peppered all over the mix. Wild fits of angry sax are frequent and are usually the focal point, while electronic noises and samples occasionally surface in the background. The guitar find its own place as well, casting moody arrangements that either intertwine or play along with the edgy sax. Combined with effects, Cal produces sounds that resemble a modem connection ("It's a Bust") or just a wild rock solo ("Ground Level"). Pigeon Post is definitely more jazz than rock, however, though you will find droppings (sorry) of exotica and dub as well. ~ Kenyon Hopkin
