Sound Down CD (2008)
Dave Corbus CD discography Guitarist Dave Corbus has had a long jazz career, though this is just his second CD as a leader. With a fluid technique and appealing sound, Corbus is well accompanied by bassist Lindsey Horner and drummer Lieven Venken on this trio session. One of the nice surprises is Corbus' selection of less familiar tunes, with one exception. But even Toots Thielemans' signature song "Bluesette" is recast in a new light, as the melody is slowed down, with reharmonized chord changes that give it a bit more of an introspective, somewhat dark flavor. His quiet samba treatment of Kenny Barron's "Sunshower" and breezy take of the late Joe Farrell's "Sound Down" are songs deserving wider recognition. The leader's originals include the funky "For the Kidz" (with a hip shuffle rhythm by Venken) and the tense "Running Scared." Horner contributed the subtle ballad "All the Time in the World." This is a delightful date by Dave Corbus, a talent deserving wider recognition. ~ Ken Dryden

On the Brink CD (2007)
Bob Montgomery (Jazz Trumpter): Bob Montgomery (trumpet); Ken Walker (bass instrument); Chris Lee (drums); Al Hermann, Dave Corbus.
While Bob Montgomery and Al Hermann might not be names on the tip of the tongue of a typical jazz fan, the two veteran musicians (both of whom have extensive musical résumés) have the rare chemistry that keeps things interesting throughout an entire session. The trumpeter and trombonist are joined by guitarist Dave Corbus, bassist Ken Walker and drummer Chris Lee for a wide-ranging trip through a baker's dozen jazz compositions, including a number of less frequently played numbers arranged by Montgomery and producer John McNeil, frequently featuring three- and four-part harmony. They devour Wayne Shorter's post-bop "United" and the late Bobby Jaspar's bop cooker "Bobby's Minor." They find new ground within well-known gems like Tadd Dameron's "Ladybird" and a surprisingly brisk take of Benny Golson's normally hip, nonchalant "Killer Joe." They close with the richly textured blues "Talkin'," a miniature duet which the two leaders jointly composed. This date is full of musical surprises and is warmly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

Terra Firma CD (2005)
Terra Firma features six talented modern mainstream players who are based in Denver. Each of these musicians deserves to be better-known but living in Denver does not help their name recognition. Trumpeter Al Hood is excellent on his ballad feature "Blackberry Winter," pianist Jeff Jenkins takes consistently rewarding solos (recalling McCoy Tyner on "Amsterdam After Dark") and Pete Sommer's muscular tenor solos add fire to the music.
