Sona Diabate songs Two female vocalists and a pair of intertwining acoustic guitars weave in and out of the deep recesses of the heart in an urgent appeal to traditional values. African Tranquility CD (1996)
African Tranquility is a pleasant sampler of relaxed African pop, but a bit of a disappointment for people interested in musicology. The tracks are gathered from the far corners of the great continent -- Madagascar, Uganda, South Africa and elsewhere -- but you'd never know it by looking at the liner notes. If you want to know the country of origin for these artists, you'll have to do your research elsewhere. But if it's just music you're looking for, there is plenty to enjoy here. While some tracks, such as Vieux Diop's "Jali" and Musa Dieng Kala's "Mawahibou," have been rendered in a decidedly new age style, the authenticity of most of the tracks provides a satisfying and relaxing journey. ~ Tim Sheridan
Arrangers: Demba Camara; Vieux Diop; Brian Keane .
