Mutants Of Sound CD (1998)
DJ Acucrack songs DJ Acucrack is the side project of Jason Novak and Jamie Duffy, two members of the alt-metal band, Acumen Nation. Mutants of Sound was their first venture into electronica (it was also the first electronic album released on Slipdisc Records, albeit through their new Lost in Bass subsidiary), and it's clear that the duo are newcomers. Pulling sounds from a variety of different styles, from drum'n'bass to ambient and big beat, they assemble the bits and pieces in a reasonably appealing fashion, yet with no real understanding of the form. Their approach seems random, and while that in theory could be exciting -- after all, a lot of great music was made by people who had no idea what they were doing -- they don't come up with new sounds, only approximations of old ones. Neveretheless, Mutants of Sound is hardly a disaster. It's certainly listenable and occasionally it has some interesting sounds, but on the whole it just doesn't leave much of an impression. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Sorted CD (2000)
DJ Acucrack music CDs DJ Acucrack (the question mark refers to there being more than one "DJ" here) indulge in the gleefully dark industrial rock made popular by KMFDM, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails et al. filtered through the hyperbeat techno of acts like the Prodigy. Not surprising, since the two programmers/musicians behind Sorted are part of Chicago's alt metal ...
