Drunk Horse Discography of CDs

In Tongues In Tongues CD (2005)
CD $13.29 Buy It  Details
Drunk Horse CD discography In the manner of their four-legged namesake, Oakland, California's Drunk Horse may stumble on In Tongues, but they don't fall while paying tribute to 1970s icons like Foghat, ZZ Top, and Thin Lizzy with varying degrees of success. The blistering, guitar-dueling opener, "Strange Transgressors" is among the finest of these ten tunes with the infectious, riff-tastic guitar work also scoring high marks as axe wielding frontman Elijah Eckert and lead guitarist Joel Robinow play to each other's strengths. The meandering instrumental "Grinding Teeth" and the musical identity crisis "Howard Phillips" -- which can't make up its mind if it's a metal tune or a blurring prog rocker -- don't fare as well. Still, fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd will be hard-pressed to ignore the power of "Nice Hooves." ~ John D. Luerssen Recording information: Seedy Underbelly, Minneapolis, MN. Personnel: Joel Robinow (vocals, guitar, electric piano, synthesizer); Elijah Eckert (vocals, guitar); Cripe Jergensen (drums). Audio Mixer: Adam Greenspan.

Drunk Horse albums Drunk Horse's third album, Adult Situations, is another mixed bag from a band that's way more artistically ambitious than just about every other band in the retro '70s hard rock sub-genre. They're also way smarter than most bands mining this same territory, and, as an unfortunate side effect of that, seemingly more ironic -- and less committed to letting their music stand on its own -- than most of those bands. Throughout this album, their bluesy, riff-based rock tunes draw on a range of familiar influences -- the James Gang's "Funk #49," Humble Pie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and early Allman Brothers -- as well as slightly less-commonplace ones such as Santana (see the Latin-tinged "Company Man") and even the jazz-rock of mid-period Steely Dan. They do a great job of taking these influences and twisting them around into songs that are, for the most part, quite a bit more involving and complex than you'd expect from such a band: for example, check out the convoluted instrumental breakdowns on "Wildlife" or the stuttering odd-time ...
Tanning Salon/Biblical Proportions Tanning Salon/Biblical Proportions CD (2001)

Drunk Horse music CDs Drunk Horse's second Man's Ruin album, Tanning Salon/Biblical Proportions, is an interesting departure from the band's self-titled debut album of 1999. Drunk Horse was a reckless, ballsy, riff-oriented hard rock party album that drew on such late-'60s and early-'70s influences as the Rolling Stones, the Faces, and the Doors. Those influences haven't disappeared from Drunk Horse's music; however, Tanning Salon/Biblical Proportions is more eccentric and experimental than its predecessor. The term "party album" doesn't really describe this CD. Drunk Horse still rocks passionately, and it still loves a good riff. But this time, the tunes are quirkier and more left of center. Elements of art rock and avant-garde rock find ...
Drunk Horse Drunk Horse CD (1999)

Drunk Horse discography Not to be confused with the alternative rock group Drunk, Drunk Horse sees to it that this self-titled CD is, for the most part, a rowdy and reckless party album. Much of Drunk Horse has a late 1960s/early 1970s kind of ambiance -- the Rolling Stones and the Faces are prominent influences, and there are hints of the Doors as well. Elijah Eckert's lead vocals have a strong Mick Jagger quality, while John Niles' guitar playing generally favors rawness and bluesy grit. There are hints of Doors organist Ray Manzarek in Cyrus Comiskey's occasional keyboard playing -- occasional being the operative word. Comiskey is primarily a bassist, but when he ...
