Skin Diving CD (2000)
A draw of breath and the sound of an object plunging into water kicks off Skindiving from the British trio Submarine, led by Japanese vocalist Adaesi Ukairo. It heralds an enchanting blend of dance-influenced trip-pop. The act throws in samples from sources like Chet Baker and Perry Como, but never let the electronica elements overwhelm the wonderful pop sensibilities of songs like the sardonically confessional "Sunbeam" or sultry (and slightly creepy) "Heartfailure." Less dense than a band like Garbage, there is an airiness to the melodies that complements the often whimsical vocals of kairo). The lyrics are more literate and straight-forward than many similar acts and there are some definite gems like the yearning "Evergreen," the dreamy "Sweet Life," and the neurotic "Welcome To This World," with it's captivating juxtaposition of manic dance beats and Chet Baker sample. There's nary a throwaway track, making Skindiving recommended listening for fans of bands like Hooverphonic or olive. ~ Tom Demalon
