||Direction of Things to Come CD (1997) |
Ensign music CDs If this full-length debut's title is meant to suggest that something new or even revolutionary can be found on the disc, it's a bit of a misnomer. But if first-rate hardcore is a reasonable substitute, listeners will forgive the presumptuous Ensign. Such hubris is hard to hold against any punk band, and with their formidable hardcore lineage, this East Coast outfit has a right to brag a little anyway. With a lineup including Tim Shaw on vocals, Ryan Murphy on drums, John Fraunberger on guitar, and bassist Nate Gluck, Ensign operates as an extremely tight hardcore unit on Direction of Things to Come. Not exactly the most dynamic of recordings, this collection of 13 overhand rights to the temple is standard hardcore material executed almost to perfection. Shaw can shout with the best of them and his bandmates deliver a precise backup that plays like a '90s hardcore lesson guide. While not the groundbreaking effort they might have been predicting, this 1997 release is still the group's finest. ~ Vincent Jeffries

||Price of Progression CD (2001) |
Ensign discography Like many East Coast hardcore/metal bands, Ensign mean well. Fighting the good fight for individualism, nonconformity, and the spirit of hardcore, their cause is certainly noble. The problem is, most of their colleagues are doing exactly the same thing, which suggests a certain kind of conformity in itself. The Price of Progression offers 17 blasts of full-tilt hardcore (played with ...

||Love the Music, Hate the Kids CD (2003) |
Ensign CD discography LOVE THE MUSIC, HATE THE KIDS contains cover versions of old-school hardcore and punk songs.
The members of Ensign play no-frills New Jersey hardcore. But the beauty of Love the Music, Hate the Kids is that it is a covers record, and the band chooses influential songs quite well, always applying a good mix of the original spirit of the tune ...
||Cast the First Stone CD (1999) |
Ensign albums With their second album, Cast the First Stone, Ensign ups the heaviness quotient, resulting in a pummeling listen that may be a little too close to metal for some tastes. All 16 songs follow the hardcore blueprint: a quick burst of chords, a brief reprieve from the bass, then a relentless spring to the end, as the vocalist shouts out ...
