Satellite Satellite CD (1998)
CD $18.85 Buy It  Details
Flatland music CDs Free jazz, acid jazz. The debut album from Flatland, a trio of electric jazzers from the West Coast, is laden with thick electric guitar riffs and solos worthy of John McLaughlin, a thumping bass groove, and frenzied drumming throughout. It's a very busy album. As with other works by the trio, there are elements of free jazz and acid jazz as one would expect (including a couple of Don Cherry compositions here), as well as elements of fusion à la Mahavishnu Orchestra (though less here than in Origin of Species) and the Zawinul days of the Miles Davis band. Electricity is made ethereal through the use of effects, alternating with groove-heavy sections. Origin of Species may be a more accessible album for new recruits, but Satellite is a fine pick as well. ~ Adam Greenberg The guitar/bass/drum trio Flatland found inspiration in the work of Charles Gayle, Sonny Sharrock & Albert Ayler. Most importantly, they stab at the seminal '70s free harmonic jazz of Keith Jarrett's Quartet and the collective Old and New Dreams Quartet, Recorded live on October 23, 1997 and at Litterbox, Portland, Oregon on December 17, 1997. Flatland: Matt Wayne (guitar); Donald Corey (bass); Todd Bishop (drums).

The fact that they're primarily electric and working on their own songs adds to that. The sound on Origin of Species is surprisingly atmospheric, working its way through sinuous grooves, long preludes, and the occasional punch of energy from Donald Corey's bass. The music, if comparable to anything, would have to be said to have parallels with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and those surrounding the Mahavishnu. The waves of sound are reminiscent of Birds of Fire at times, and at times Miles Davis' electric era is evoked (especially in the Joe Zawinul-penned "In a Silent Way"). An interesting ...
