Promised Works CD (1997)
For Carnation music CDs Originally released in 1997 and reissued a decade later on the venerable Touch & Go label, PROMISED WORKS collects the first two releases (FIGHT SONGS and MARSHMALLOWS) by vocalist/guitarist Brian McMahan in his post-Slint guise as the For Carnation. More meditative than the angular indie-rock of McMahan's former band, these tracks present his soft voice and crystalline guitar playing at its melancholy best, as revealed on the spare "Grace Beneath the Pines" and the delicate "On the Swing." Although there are moments of spiky energy on PROMISED WORKS, notably the moody "How I Beat the Devil," one of a few tracks to feature fellow Slint alum David Pajo, the compilation is largely a spare, pensive set.
The For Carnation: Andrew Bonacci, Tim Ruth, Michael McMahan, David Pajo, Douglas McCombs, John Weiss, Brian McMahan, John Herndon.
Audio Remasterer: John Golden .

Marshmallows CD (1996)
For Carnation discography Slint fans, beware: Brian McMahan, the former frontman behind one of the most influential indie bands nobody ever heard of, is back, and this time he's very, very...subdued. Like Slint, The For Carnation constructs vivid aural paintings of warm, rich textures that are able to transform the listener's mood and mindset. Unfortunately, the mood doesn't change a whole lot over the course of the band's debut EP, instead wallowing in a melancholy mire of minor-key guitar strumming and delicately whispered vocals. This music is too minimalist to even be called ambient; it's almost nonexistent! Only on the lumbering instrumental "I Wear the Gold," which is propelled ever forward by Tortoise drummer John Herndon's insistent rhythms, does Marshmallows approach the sort of dynamic tension that made Slint's music so invigorating. A fine album perfectly suited for rainy Sunday afternoon listening, Marshmallows is perhaps best recommended for those who find Codeine and Low just a tad too exhilarating. ~ Bret Love
The For Carnation: Grant Barger, Brad Wood, Doug McCombs, John Herndon, Brian McMahan, John Weiss, Tim Ruth, Michael McMahan.

For Carnation CD (2000)
For Carnation songs Musique noir indeed. The For Carnation has heeded the call of Darth Vader and has gone over to the dark side. While the preceding MARSHMALLOWS had moments that you might call "pastoral," there's none of that here. The air on this disc is thick, humid, and dark. Not that TFC was ever a feel-good party band, but here the gloom is palpable.
"Being Held" is splendidly haunting. It starts with what sounds like a distant alarm going off in the warehouse district and morphs into an infectious 6/8 groove. Also a must hear is Kim Deal's processed vocals on "Tales." With nary a major ...
