Roadrunner! The Best of the Gants Roadrunner! The Best of the Gants CD (2000)
CD $17.79 Buy CD  Details
Gants CD discography Recorded between 1965 & 1967. Includes liner notes by Mike Stax & Jud Cost. Digitally remastered by Bob Irwin (Sundazed Studios, Coxsackie, New York). Don't let their Beatle haircuts or R&B cover song list fool you; underneath it all, the Gants were pure Southern-bred frat boys. Their hipness in knowing a good Bo Diddley song when they heard it brought them some measure of success and their regional squareness separated them from the rest of the pack, which is half the point of this 20-track collection. If you're amassing a collection of '60s garage bands, you'll eventually get around to this one, but it won't be in the first 50 you buy. ~ Cub Koda Compilation; From Their Liberty Albums & Non-LP Singles;1965+ Compilation producer: Mike Stax. Personnel: Don Wood (drums). Audio Mixer: Bob Irwin. Liner Note Author: Mike Stax . Recording information: 1965-1967. Arrangers: Dallas Smith; Donald Peake; Dave Gates. The Gants: Sid Herring (vocals, guitar); Johnny Sanders (guitar); Vince Montgomery (bass); Don Wood (drums). Producers: Hurshel Wiginton, Dallas Smith.
I Wonder I Wonder CD (1988) 5 stars
CD $19.09 Buy CD  Details
Gants albums An identically titled compilation of Gants material, with identical liner notes, appeared as an 18-track LP on Bam Caruso in 1988. This is essentially a CD expansion of that album, retaining all 18 songs from the LP and adding a further dozen for a total of 30. Hence it's a preferable makeover from every vantage point, particularly as it includes three vital tracks that were somehow omitted from the LP configuration: "Roadrunner" (their sole national hit), their 1966 single "Little Boy Sad" (a crunching cover of a song previously done by Johnny Burnette), and the Rolling Stones-like original "(You Can't Blow) Smoke Rings." As with the 1988 Bam Caruso LP, star tracks include the country-rock beat ballad "Spoonful of Sugar" (which recalls the material on Beatles for Sale), the Merseybeat imitation "I Don't Want to See Her Again," and the poignant folk-rocker "I Wonder." A few tracks with strings produced by future Bread leader ...
Introducing... Introducing... CD (2005)
CD $12.89 Buy CD  Details
Gants music CDs Sundazed's 2006 release Introducing the Gants rounds up 16 rarities that the Southern garage rock band recorded between 1965 and 1967. Apart from the opening pair of "Another Chance" and "What's Your Name" -- the A- and B-sides, respectively, of a single they released on Statue in 1967 -- this is all previously unreleased material, including the first recording sessions at Sam Phillips' recording studio in 1965. The mere existence of so much unreleased material is rather remarkable considering that the Gants' albums proper often seemed padded with covers, but Introducing is actually more interesting than those to a certain extent, since it is the strongest proof of ...
