King Frost Parade King Frost Parade CD (1997)
CD $14.89 Buy It  Details
Geezer Lake music CDs Geezer Lake's style of dark, turbulent indie rock could easily be a great disaster, considering that the band frequently sounds like a metalesque version of Archers of Loaf -- not quite a promising description. King Frost Parade is so intelligently constructed, however, that the band manages to overshoot its sound and step into interestingly non-standard territory. Once past their sludgy rock inclinations, they veer into clean, syncopated structures, which implies a knowledge beyond how to simply rock out ("Birds" alternates between the two tendencies, while "Twenty Five" shoots straight for some very appealing ground). The album also presents a sense of polish and ambition that wasn't nearly as strong on 1995's Hearts Won't Try This. Rather than sounding deconstructive, the band's experimentation attempts to construct musical forms which are largely their own. ~ Nitsuh Abebe Audio Mixer: Jerry Kee. Recording information: Duck-Kee Studios, Mebane, NC. Photographers: Eric Shepherd; Jim Clodfelter. Arrangers: Chris Clodfelter; Eric Shepherd; Scotty Irving; Jim Clodfelter; Harrison Cannon.

Geezer Lake discography Hearts Won't Try This offers an interesting take on the sort of dramatic, angular indie rock Geezer Lake takes as its background (add a dash of metal to Archers of Loaf, and you're almost there). The record has a very jagged, deconstructive feel which could almost be seen as preferable to the polished ambition of 1996's King Frost Parade. In the end, though, both albums are equally appealing; Hearts Won't Try This lives up to the skronky rock templates from which the band draws, even if it doesn't have the inventive and unique qualities of its successor. ~ Nitsuh Abebe Recorded at Wave Castle, Hillsborough, North Carolina and Duck-Kee, Raleigh, North Carolina.
