Giuffria CD (1984)
Giuffria discography Keyboard maestro Gregg Giuffria originally planned to retain the Angel title for his second high-profile cinematic rock show, but the scalding ivories soaring throughout this record prove he's fully in charge, making the Giuffria moniker an apt band name. The long, blond angel always kicks off his projects with some cool keys, and the pulsing prelude to "Do Me Right" overpowers the rest of ...

Silk & Steel CD (1986)
Giuffria songs First ever release on CD, includes the bonus track, 'Say It Ain't True'. Digitally remastered limited and numbered edition. Standard jewelcase housed in a slipcase. 2000 release.
Released back when there was always two sides to every audio story (i.e., side one and side two), Giuffria's second offering houses an interesting concept: polarizing the huffy from the heavy. This is hardly a revolutionary idea, as such was the common format of most AOR at the time, and perhaps for the sake of balance some silk slips into the steel and vice versa, so the record ultimately ends up heavy on the light. The titular titan's bombastic keyboards float like ...

Heart Of Metal 2 CD (2001)
Giuffria CD discography Digitally remastered by Elliott "Monster" Federman (SAJE Sound).
Like its predecessor, Heart of Metal, Vol. 2 styles itself as a compilation of heavy metal love songs, though in practice it's got much more album-oriented rock and arena rock than true pop-metal balladry. Regardless of whether the bands fit headbanger criteria, though, they rock hard enough to make most of the material fit together quite well. There are a couple of flaws, however. With a love-song theme, you'd expect Heart of Metal 2 to be all power ballads, but it isn't -- there are a few mid-tempo rockers here as well, which kind of breaks the mood (and Extreme's "Rest in Peace," while it is an overlooked gem, isn't even a love song). More importantly, though, the compilation is weighted down with entries from too many second- and third-tier acts. There are some immediately recognizable hits -- Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again," Nelson's "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection," Tesla's "Love Song," Sheriff's "When I'm With You" -- but some of the other tracks are lesser-known items by prominent artists, and some just never managed to distinguish themselves all that much. So, in the end, Heart of Metal, Vol. 2 is a decent collection, but not much more. ~ Steve Huey
