Brand New Towns CD (2007)
Robert Gomez CD discography Following the same path he took in his 2005 album Etherville, on Brand New Towns Robert Gomez plays shimmery, melancholy indie pop songs that speak of love found and love lost, layering his vocals delicately over acoustic guitar and piano, strings and brass, melodica and organ. But despite all of this, Gomez's music is anything but ornate; it's chamber pop played in the Texas plains, without pretension or excess adornment. In fact, it's the sparseness of it all that comes across more than the gloomy cello or plinking keyboards, echoing through his soft voice and intimate lyrics. He's definitely taken a clue from Elliott Smith, double-tracking his vocals into the sad but slightly threatening melodies that the late singer did so well. "You're so perfect without ...

Etherville CD (2005)
Robert Gomez albums Robert Gomez's first album, 2001's Robert Gomez Trio, was an entirely competent but not particularly exciting jazz guitar instrumental showcase. The follow-up, 2005's Etherville, is so completely different that you might suspect that it's actually by an unrelated artist with the same name: this is vocal-centered indie pop with surprisingly little guitar. What accounts for the change? Perhaps the influence of Gomez's old bandmate Norah Jones, who lends typically lustrous harmonies to the shimmering opening track, "Happiness Today," but this album also has little to do with Jones' country-inflected cocktail jazz-pop. Instead, think of Elliott Smith or Michael Penn's melodic melancholy, mixed with some of Lisa Germano's depressive dream pop: keyboards, strings, and shimmering acoustic rhythm guitars are at the heart of these largely minor-key songs, with all manner of obscure and artsy noises around the ...

Suburban Nature CD (2010)
Robert Gomez CD discography Sarah Jaffe's debut sounds a bit like pre-More Adventurous Rilo Kiley: folksy, sparse, and more indebted to the D.I.Y. songwriter scene than the commercial coffee house fare that orchestrates montage sequences in Grey's Anatomy. Recorded in 2008 and released two years later, it chronicles the first chapter of Jaffe's career, collecting songs written during her teenage years as well as a sampling of recent material. Suburban Nature isn't entirely a solo album, though; Jaffe writes the music herself, but the songs come to life thanks to her backing band, a tasteful four-piece that includes two string players and the multi-instrumentalist Robert Gomez. It's thanks to those musicians that Jaffe is able to blaze her own trail in the crowded female folkster market, and one of Suburban Nature's biggest strengths is the way her band frames her ...

Me Voy CD (2005)
Robert Gomez albums Lunaractive's sound is one of a kind, but highly inspired by many bands old and new, known and unknown. Combining involved 2-part guitar riffing with three part vocal harmonies, Lunaractive is known for writing songs that are often described as "epic" and opera-like. One reviewer said, "each ...
