Imaginary Lover Imaginary Lover CD (1997)
CD $17.09 Buy It  Details
Grace Darling CD discography New Orleans' answer to Candy Dulfer, Grace Darling (surely that's not her real name) is both a torch singer and a tenor saxophonist with decidedly middle of the road aspirations. She calls her mix of pop, light jazz, and soft rock "pop gumbo," and Allen Toussaint's typically excellent production does add a decidedly New Orleans flair to the otherwise fairly standard songs. Darling is a very good singer and a not-bad saxophone player -- she's better than Kenny G, which admittedly is not saying much -- but the material is consistently lightweight. Al Kooper's title track has some spunk and grit to it, but the rest of the album sounds like it's trying to be polite and inoffensive, as if Darling and crew made this album specifically to be played as background music in New Orleans-themed chain restaurants. Darling's pop gumbo definitely needs more spice. ~ Stewart Mason Recorded at Sea-Saint Recording Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana from October 1996-May 1997. Personnel: Grace Darling (vocals, saxophone, tenor saxophone); Renard Poché (guitar, keyboards, drums, percussion, background vocals); Darren Minor (keyboards, Moog synthesizer); Allen Toussaint (synthesizer); Garland Wilson, Bernard "Bunchy" Johnson (drums, background vocals); Nick Daniels, Carl Dennis (background vocals). Grace Darling albums Allen Toussaint is the epitome of the essence of New Orleans music; here he does Christmas songs with the two genres forming a perfect meld. We have some of the essentials -- "Silent Night, Holy Night," and "Winter Wonderland" (as done by Allen on solo piano), and "Jingle Bells" (with the New Birth Brass Band) -- and a few other standards done in non-sappy ways, along with several other not-so-familiar Christmas songs, all performed by the cream of New Orleans musicians. There are blues, Second Line, rhythm & blues, and jazz, all represented in a coherent manner, and newcomer Grace Darling acquits herself well. ~ Bob Gottlieb With New Birth Brass Band Larry Hamilton,Allen Toussaint Recorded at Sea-Saint Recording Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana from December 1996 to July 1997.
