Academy Songs, Vol. 1 CD (2013)
Holopaw albums Led by singer/songwriter John Orth, Florida-based indie band Holopaw have molded epic statements more than they've been on any regular release schedule with their albums. Academy Songs, Vol. 1 is their fourth album, arriving 12 years after their inception. The highly ornamented and painstakingly arranged album follows more delicate early fare, and presents a ...

Holopaw CD (2003)
Holopaw music CDs A delicate, contemplative union of indie rock, country, and electronica, Holopaw's self-titled debut shows off more of John Orth's singing and songwriting talent, which he also displayed on Ugly Casanova's Sharpen Your Teeth. A similarly quirky, backwater sensibility permeates this album, but Holopaw's sound is dreamier and more quietly unconventional. The mix of pedal ...

Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness. CD (2009)
Holopaw's third album marks a turning point for the Florida-based band, encompassing a label change, a drastic personnel shift, and a significant stylistic evolution. After two albums for Sub Pop, they've switched to an imprint closer to home, settling at the Sunshine State's Bakery Outlet Records. Only singer John Orth and guitarist Jeff Hays remain from the lineup that recorded 2005's Quit +/or Fight, and they've built up a new Holopaw around them, expanding their sound in the process. Earlier, they occupied ...

Quit +/Or Fight CD (2005)
Florida's Holopaw follows up its promising Sub Pop debut with QUIT +/OR FIGHT, an even more adventurous and expansive album. On these 11 tracks, singer/songwriter John Orth leads the ensemble on a path lined with shimmering guitars, gentle harmonies, loose rhythms, and breezy arrangements. Orth's high, plaintive vocals keep the proceedings deceptively well grounded, whether he's drifting into a romantic moment (the chiming "Losing Light"), conjuring up woodland imagery (the twangy "Clearing"), or seeing wandering spirits (the melancholy "Ghosties"). Holopaw's secret weapon is its delicate aesthetic; QUIT +/OR FIGHT seems like an object so fragile that it might break, but so fascinatingly beautiful that it has to be picked up regardless. The light, meandering vibe of the disc may be too wispy for some, but repeated listens reveal a substantial record that unravels at a slow, but entrancing, pace. Those who gravitate towards the hushed sounds of Iron & Wine and Sufjan Stevens will find a charmingly likeminded act in Holopaw.
