Jennyanykind albums I NEED YOU starts in a rousing, '60s psychedelic manner with the rollickingly catchy, upbeat "Up Early in the Morning" and "We Can Be Happy." However, the mood switches to a Stones-like barroom snarl on songs such as "Young Boy Blues," and the bluesy epic "It's a Wicked World." In fact, a perfect undertone of raucous rock rebellion flavors this entire fitful, fanciful record, the vague scent of sawdust and beer permeating a pretty pop album. I NEED YOU continues Jennyanykind's commitment to the Chapel Hill tradition of gritty, unique music. Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is the home of the University of North Carolina, where the campus radio station is famous for its idiosyncratic, wonderfully inconsistent playlist. Jennyanykind reflects this eccentricity in its music which, while rooted in breezy, country-esque rock, unpredictably incorporates everything from blues to jazz flourishes in a pattern distinctly its own. By its sixth effort, I NEED YOU, the collective led by songwriting brothers Michael and Mark Holland toned the energy down a bit and found just the right level of pop for its organic roots-rock sound. Recording information: Big Johns Studio (1990S).

Jennyanykind music CDs After a brief stint on Elektra Records, Jennyanykind went back to their independent ways, producing 1998's Big Johns at their new recording studio of the same name for Yep Roc records. A reputable '90s East Coast roots rock outfit, guitarist/vocalist Michael Holland, drummer Mark Holland, and bassist Cliff Browne do nothing to sully their considerable musical reputation. Perhaps a little too lo-fidelity than the group intended, the gritty production featured on Big Johns, while purposefully uneven, can get a tad distracting as band members drop notes and even shift into incorrect song sections. Generally, this kind of recording absolutism is refreshing, and Jennyanykind certainly have the spirit and musical chops to pull it ...

Jennyanykind songs Punk rock and Muscle Shoals seem combined so effortlessly in Jennyanykind's music that it's hard to figure out where one ends and the other begins. On Revelater, the Greenville, SC, brothers' sole jaunt into a big label deal and the New York City scene, these two influences definitely operate alternately at times. The opening track, "Repent in Time," moves back and forth between a bright soul ...

If you own a home studio, as this band does, you might as well use it. But Peas And Collards is the first release from twin brothers Michael and Mark Holland in three years, even though the album is their eighth overall. A self-produced project that clocks in at over an hour, with a few tracks stretched to nine minutes (the rest hover around five), the ...
