||Mother CD (2009) |
Kaori CD discography Clubgoers may know Susumu Yokata for his funky, disco-influenced work, but connoisseurs of elegant, precisely-crafted ambient electronica know the Japanese producer as one of the most skilled artists in the genre. MOTHER, Yokota's 2009 release, builds on the spectral atmospheres of its predecessor, LOVE OR DIE, yet builds on these textures with vocals and an approach to composition that nods to song structure (though it's only a nod). Guest vocalists, including members of the Chap, Our Broken Garden, and Efterklang, help flesh out Yokata's complex digital scapes and synth-washes to create a dreamy listening experience that cradles the listener, in an echo of the album's title, in an embryonic embrace.
Susumu Yokota returns with one of his most engaging albums to date, on which every track is a gently glowing gem. Featuring the vocal talents of Casper Clausen (Efterklang), Anna Bronsted (Our Broken Garden), Claire Hope (The Chap), Panos Ghikas (The Chap), Nancy Elizabeth, Caroline Ross, and Kaori, Mother is full of great songsa mesmerising web of sound made of subtle rhythms and deep tones.
