Sixteen Haiku and Other Stories CD (2004)
Pinkie Maclure CD discography 16 HAIKU & OTHER STORIES features the poetry of George Seferis set to music by Sigmatropic.
How many albums can claim to unite a famous Greek poet, underground electronica, a 600-year-old Japanese literary form, and a handful of major figures from contemporary indie and alternative music? The answer is: one--Sigmatropic's 16 HAIKU & OTHER STORIES. The disc features readings of haiku written by Nobel Prize-winning Greek poet George Seferis, with each sung/spoken-word performance by a different guest artist (including Cat Power, Robert Wyatt, Alejandro Escovedo, American Music Club's Mark Eitzel, Giant Sand's Howe Gelb, and others) seamlessly integrated into Sigmatropic's lushly dense electronic soundscapes.
Like all haiku, Seferis's are characterized by brevity, natural imagery, and a keen meditative quality. The music is challenging, surprising, and utterly contemporary ("Haiku 1," read by Stereolab's Laetitia Sadler, sounds as if it could be a Stereolab song), with the mood and tone modulated to suit the theme of each individual haiku. This is a truly remarkable recording, as notable for its uniqueness and listenability as its vision in breaking down walls between cultures and genres. A booklet with Seferis's texts and an enhanced CD featuring a short video add to the treasure.
