Summertown CD (1999)
Mayflies USA discography Summertown is the sound of a band proud to carry the banner for classic and alternative power pop groups from the 1960s to the 1980s. It sounds like a reviewer's cop-out, but how much you like this stuff seems to depend on how enamored you are of the form as a whole, rather than the content in particular. The songs are confidently executed and ...

Walking in a Straight Line CD (2002)
Mayflies USA CD discography The Mayflies USA are one of a horde of bands who are influenced by the sounds of '70s power pop. Unlike a great many of these bands, the Mayflies USA can write songs that go beyond the mere aping of an old-school sound. While the songs they play sound like they would be right at home blasting out of car radios in the parking ...

Pity List CD (2000)
Mayflies USA albums THE PITY LIST, as the album's title suggests, is a shameless cry for attention from a highly undervalued band that has spent a significant amount of time playing the underdog role. The pure pop sensibility of Chapel Hill, North Carolina's The Mayflies USA has placed the band on the outer fringe of a scene that has typically endorsed a more unstructured form of the ...

Mayflies U.S.A. CD (1997)
Mayflies USA music CDs Mastered by Chris Stamey, the Mayflies USA's eponymous debut EP echoes the sort of tuneful, intelligent Southern power pop that Stamey's dB's epitomized, along with traces of classic bands like Big Star, the Beatles, and Let's Active, plus the more indie sounds of the Posies, Teenage Fanclub, and Superchunk. While the band sounds largely derivative of their influences rather than offering anything refreshingly new, ...

I Am What I Am CD (2012)
Mayflies USA CD discography The Yep Roc label looks back at its first 15 years with the commemorative compilation I Am What I Am. Yep Roc was founded in 1997, during a time when many labels focused on a particular region or style, but Yep Roc diverged from this pattern, instead seeking out rising stars and legacy artists with a looser attitude toward genre. The most consistent element to the label's sound is a love for roots music, reflected here from John Doe & the Sadies' earthy "It Just Dawned on Me" to the modern bluegrass of Chatham County Line's "Wildwood" and the bittersweet alt-country of Chuck Prophet's "You and Me Baby (Holding On)." On the sweeter side, Fountains of Wayne offer their literate power pop revivalism with "Someone's Gonna Break Your Heart," while Sloan shine on the hooky "Who Taught You to Live Like That?" and the Apples in Stereo charm with "Same Old Drag." And going back to legacy artists, tracks from Nick Lowe ("Lately I've Let Things Slide"), Dave Alvin ("Sinful Daughter"), and Robyn Hitchcock ("Adventure Rocket Ship") show these ...
