Dan McMillion Discography of CDs
||Give It One CD (2004) |
Dan McMillion music CDs Based in Florida, the Dan McMillion Jazz Orchestra is modeled on the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra of the 1970s and, to a lesser extent, the '60s, with its leader belting out impressive high-note blasts on his trumpet. After the first few numbers, one becomes weary of all the high notes and fortunately, the music settles down a bit while still remaining mostly high-powered. In addition to McMillion, the key soloists include altoist Tom Dietz and tenors Tim Stamps and Mark Gould. Some of the selections are a bit commercial and this orchestra has a derivative sound but the musicianship is excellent. Certainly Maynard ...

Dan McMillion discography Although he is not that well-known outside of Florida where is based, Dan McMillion is one of jazz's great high-note trumpeters. Maynard Ferguson is an obvious inspiration, and this CD is dedicated to the late trumpeter. McMillion's spectacular upper-register solos often sound close to Ferguson (his low notes are also quite warm) and his straight-ahead jazz band is just as high-powered as MF's more jazz-oriented groups. Among the key soloists are trombonist Keith Oshiro (who also has a rather impressive range), altoist Tom Dietz, and David Moss on tenor. Every song on this CD has its moments of excitement, even "Danny Boy" and "Hey ...

||Nice n' Juicy CD (2009) |
Dan McMillion albums Dan McMillion is a high-note trumpet specialist in the manner of the late Maynard Ferguson, though because his jazz orchestra is based in Florida, he hasn't had much national exposure. Some of the repertoire of this CD seems like a throwback to Ferguson's fusion era in the 1970s, when he delved heavily into pop songs that proved to be pretty forgettable in a jazz setting. "MacArthur Park" may have been a huge hit for Ferguson and his high-note theatrics (thankfully its insipid lyrics were omitted), but in McMillion's hands, it simply sounds very dated, as do the forgettable treatments of Michael Jackson's pop smash ...
