But too many bands are content to work within these parameters. Then there are bands like the Merrymakers, who realize that it's the little things that make the difference in power pop. Little things like the brief a cappella intro to the album's opener, "Saltwater Drinks," and the appropriation of the piano riff from ABBA's "Money Money Money" in "April's Fool"-a nice and surprisingly rare nod to Sweden's first pop superstars. BUBBLEGUN is chockablock with insistent hooks, neat production tricks, and, most importantly, a sense of humor and a feel for dynamics. The leisurely "Monkey In The Middle" and the early-'70s AM bubblegum of "Under The Light Of The Moon" follow a hyper-speed "Superstar."
