I'll Follow You CD (2007)
Oakley Hall songs After three beneath-the-radar releases that fell somewhere between shambolic folk-rock and twangy psych, Brooklyn's Oakley Hall released I'LL FOLLOW YOU in 2007 on the esteemed Merge Records. Certainly the band's most accomplished album to date, I'LL FOLLOW YOU contains all of the key elements of Oakley Hall's sound, yet finds them framed in a more lush, sonically expansive context. And while frontman Pat Sullivan's songwriting has never been in question, the songs here are meticulously arranged and show a new attention to studio detail.
On "Alive Among Thieves," the guitars crackle with Crazy Horse-like intensity, yet mesh perfectly with Sullivan and singer Rachel Cox's stunning harmonies; "Rue the Blues" takes a joyful country-folk melody and adds an ever-so-slight motorik thrust via Sullivan's percolating harpsichord. Cox takes center stage on "All the Way Down," and displays a new sense of restraint often absent from her impassioned delivery. A notable step forward, I'LL FOLLOW YOU is both tremendously well-constructed and a joy to listen to, deserving a ranking on par with M. Ward's POST-WAR, My Morning Jacket's Z, and Wilco's SKY BLUE SKY on the list of notable experimental roots albums of the early 2000s.

Gypsum Strings CD (2006)
Oakley Hall CD discography Too expansive and jammy to be called simply alt-country, too avant-garde for the hacky-sack set, and absolutely nothing like Wilco, Oakley Hall's 2006 album, GYPSUM STRINGS, is a lovely musical anomaly. Sounds reminiscent of everything from Crazy Horse and Little Feet to Fred Neil to Neu! and the Velvet Underground can be heard on the Brooklyn band's third full-length. A loose, ragged feel dominates throughout, but it's held in check by remarkably varied musical interplay and assiduous songcraft. And the aching harmonies of frontman Pat Sullivan and guitarist Rachel Cox are, without hyperbole, as distinctive as ...

Second Guessing CD (2006)
Oakley Hall albums SECOND GUESSING, the first of two albums Brooklyn country-rock ensemble Oakley Hall released in 2006, is a slightly more cohesive and focused affair than its follow-up, GYPSUM STRINGS. The band doesn't hold back, though; this is a sprawling affair replete with all of Oakley Hall's trademarks, including ragged glory guitars, the requisite krautrock-style jam (here in the form of "Volume Rambler"), and lovely boy-girl harmonies that evoke old rusted beer cans and the open road. But where GYPSUM STRINGS pulled an eclectic range of styles into its musical brew, SECOND GUESSING is firmly and lovingly rooted ...
