Ours Discography of CDs

Precious Precious CD (2002) 4.7 stars
CD $18.85 Buy It  Details Enhanced CD
Ours CD discography "The sky was screaming I lost you/I tried but me what could I do" opens the second record by Ours, and aptly captures the mournful, angst-ridden tone present throughout PRECIOUS. While Ours is ostensibly a group, they center around singer/songwriter Jimmy Gnecco whose sweeping magisterial vocal style balanced by an unshakeable brooding melancholy and moodiness underscoring his work has earned him frequent and rather on the mark comparisons to Radiohead and the late Jeff Buckley. On the opening track, and among others, U2 arena moments come to mind and the straightforward Velvet Underground cover ("Femme Fatale") in the middle of it all seems not the least bit out of place. As has been delved into ad infinitum, all "sounds like" comparisons are flawed and inadequate, and so it goes with PRECIOUS and as the record majestically yet still understatedly unfolds, Ours proves that more than anything else, they sound like themselves. PRECIOUS is overwhelmingly hypnotic, as it lurks in the background the listener realizes they have been wrapped up, entranced by the dark yet alluring melody and when one thinks they have Ours all figured out, out pops a driving, poetic song like "If Flowers Turn" or the dramatic fury of "Disaster In A Halo." Ours: Jimmy Gnecco, Race, Dave Milone, Anthony DeMarco, Ethan Jones. Personnel: Jimmy Gnecco (vocals, guitar); Dave Milone (guitar); Tony DeMarco (keyboards); Ethan Johns (drums); Zoe Bonham (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Ed Thacker; Ethan Johns. Photographer: Dean Karr. Unknown Contributor Role: Tony DeMarco. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.

Ours albums Ours frontman Jimmy Gnecco mentored under Jeff Buckley, and the similarities between the two are uncanny on his band's debut album, Distored Lullabies. Ours music CDs For their third full-length and Columbia Records debut, MERCY.(DANCING FOR THE DEATH OF AN IMAGINARY ENEMY), New Jersey quintet Ours relocated to L.A. and tapped Rick Rubin as producer. With new guitarist Static delivering Edge-like guitar work and Jimmy Gnecco switching between Bono-esque howls and ecstatic falsettos, Ours clearly boned up on U2's signature sounds and recast themselves as a heavier version of the Irish quartet. The transition works, though, as MERC delivers knock-out after knock-out of barbed, tension-and-release alt-rock.
