Number 1 Vinyl LP (2010)
Pacer songs For those who loved '70s punk and grew dismayed then disgusted when early-'80s hardcore gave way to lunkheads playing faster and shrieking louder than the last lot, today's punk has improved. Songs, hooks, and ensemble playing aren't trifles, and this debut 10" (with digital download card) from this U.K. foursome (half emerging from ten-year vets the Steal) has rockin' riffs from Dave (punks hate last names), tunes, and reasonable tempos -- giving Dave room to revive the style Brian Baker borrowed from the Ruts for Dag Nasty and All, then Dickie Hammond pinched for Leatherface. OK, aside from the standout "Pasternak," singer Mark's monotone shouting could have and should have been as tuneful as his band (hey, even bold Brit bawlers like Jimmy Pursey, Mensi, Wayne Barrett, and Stinky Turner managed it), and that's too bad. Nevertheless the other three smoke, so there's value in these grooves. ~ Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover

Big Buildings, Small Stars CD (2002)
Pacer CD discography The echoes of crickets at the beginning of "Reunion" give way to Kim Ware-Mathews' commanding vocals and Jeremy Mathews' steady guitar on Pacer's second album. The husband and wife team released Big Buildings, Small Stars on the pair's own label, Eskimo Kiss Records, in early 2002. The rest of the disc features Pacer's good-natured style of indie rock. Mathews steps in on lead vocals on "Workin Too Hard." The couple shares vocal duties on "She Makes." Their harmonies are generally steady and graceful. The pace changes throughout the disc, from the hearty and invigorating "Song About It" to the tender "Find the Time." Bill Patterson's steady hand on drums holds everything together. Ware-Mathews offers her amiable style of folk-pop vocals on "Good in It All." Songs like the whimsical "Telemarket" and the reflective "Sad Girl" continue the album's dichotomy until the very end. The album was recorded in the band's home state of North Carolina at Duck Kee No. 8 Studios. ~ Stephen Cramer
