Mapmaker CD (2007)
Parts & Labor music CDs Innovative Brooklyn trio Parts & Labor raise the bar yet again on their fourth effort, 2007's MAPMAKER. As on the group's other releases, MAPMAKER offers up plenty of art-damaged noise, especially given the predominance of clattering, thunderous percussion and unpredictable sonic swerves. Yet the songs on the album also deliver more melodies and hooks than any previous Parts & Labor disc.
Opener "Fractured Skies" is a case in point in the way its heavy attack lays the groundwork for hooks and pop craft. Even at its most avant garde (as on ...

Receivers CD (2008)
Parts & Labor discography Though Parts & Labor have been mainstays of the Brooklyn noise rock scene since their inception in the early `00s, few of their early efforts are as immediately accessible as RECEIVERS, an album that blends the aggressive textures and experimental bent of albums like STAY AFRAID with a cheerily melodic, unrepentantly pop-friendly sensibility that has little precedent in the group's catalogue. If the group's 2007 release, MAPMAKER, featured ghostly but anthemic vocals buried beneath the group's trademark wall-of-sound noisemaking, RECEIVERS boldly brings those choruses front and center, supplementing them with ...

Stay Afraid CD (2006)
Parts & Labor songs On their full-length debut, New York's Parts & Labor trade in a combination of emo, punk, and controlled squalling guitar noise that at times recalls the intensity of the Velvet Underground. The band's frenzied sonic assault on songs like "Timeline" and "A Pleasant Day" frames impassioned vocals, while furious, careening percussion drives the music inexorably forward, most obviously in the chiming "Springtime Hibernation."

Constant Future CD (2011)
Parts & Labor CD discography Like a big hug or a hand on your shoulder at just the right moment, Parts & Labor capture a sound that can only be described as reassuring on Constant Future. Whether it comes from the fuzzy warmth of the synthesizers that wrap you up like a blanket or the all-encompassing atmospherics of the vocals, there's something about the Brooklyn band's brand of noise pop that just feels like it's there for you, letting you know that everything will be all right while it prepares a nice hot cup of ...

Rise, Rise, Rise CD (2003)
Parts & Labor albums Ever since the Nirvana/Pearl Jam/grunge upheaval of the early '90s, the term "alternative rock" has, for the most part, been a figure of speech. Post-'80s rockers who are loosely defined as alternative -- a vast group that includes everyone from Creed to No Doubt to Korn to Ben Folds Five -- are quite mainstream. So they aren't really an alternative to the norm (certainly not in the way that the Germs or Teenage Jesus & the Jerks were an alternative to corporate rock back in the late '70s). But rock ...

Escapers 2: Grind Pop CD (2008)
Parts & Labor music CDs Parts & Labor were quite prolific circa 2008, releasing two full lengths, and the curious 51-song EP ESCAPERS 2: GRIND POP. The release is the product of the Brooklyn trio secluding themselves in a studio and writing and recording 51 songs, the longest of which is a little over a minute and the shortest clocking in at a mere four seconds. The band claims it to be an ode to some of their favorite bands like the Minutemen and the Melvins. It's not a project to be taken too seriously, ...
