Phew CD discography On this 1981 set from one of the few (or Phew) bands to revisit the sound of Chicago punk icons Big Black, the group is joined by Holger Czukay of the German underground heroes Can, as well as producer Conny Plank. This is a superb, virtually unknown album by the Japanese vocalist Phew, formerly of the punk/no wave band Aunt ...

Phew music CDs In 1992 Golden Palominos bandleader, producer, and drummer extraordinaire Anton Fier made the first of two solo recordings. Fier was experimenting with rhythms and textures, and furthering his interests in using primarily literary texts as inspirations and compositional devices. Indeed, Dreamspeed was composed and recorded one year before the groundbreaking Golden Palominos album This Is How It Feels. In ...

Phew CD discography Since the disbanding of his 1990s group, Ground Zero, Otomo Yoshihide has made it a life philosophy to keep his fans in a constant state of surprise. After his conversion to ultra-minimalist electronics and his return to jazz (but still a very warped form) with his New Jazz Quintet, he offers Dreams, billed to Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Ensemble. ...

Phew albums Other than Null & Void, this is the most fully realized album from Ground Zero, one of many projects master-minded by ambitious gadfly-turntablist Otomo Yoshihide. Although this Japanese band includes two drummers, a sampler-player, and a shamisen (Japanese stringed instrument) player, the real voice is saxophonist Kikuchi Naruyoshi, whose wails and bleats lead most of the songs here. As far as cover albums go, it's obviously not as historic as Ray Charles Modern Sounds in Country and Western, but it's much smarter than Guns N' Roses The Spaghetti Incident?. An impressively diverse brew is served ...
Dreamspeed Dreamspeed CD (1994)

Phew songs Wherein the co-founder and acknowledged leader of the Golden Palominos puts out a solo recording with many of the same musicians and, surprise, achieves something very much like a Palominos album. The general structures are the same: the deep, funky dance rhythms, Fier's thick drum style, Bill Laswell's cavernous bass. Buckethead appears on several tracks, injecting a more overtly rockish aspect into the music, but otherwise the main difference is the presence of the vocalist Phew. But even so, she assumes the role laid out by numerous female vocalists with this crew, talk-singing her way coolly through the pieces, casting verbal asides in a shrugging manner. The music is similar enough to other Palominos projects that one even gets the impression that there's some recycling going on, but Fier certainly does what he does very well. One interesting note: On the second version of "Dreamspeed," Fred Frith is sampled from his 1975 Guitar Solos album. The songs have a convincing solidity and drive even if the creative sphere they occupy is relatively restricted. A good groove record but one inessential to all but Palominos completists. ~ Brian Olewnick Personnel includes: Anton Fier (drums), Makyno Kazu, Phew (vocals), Matt Stein (programming).
