Pole, otherwise known as Stefan Betke, made an impressive U.S. debut with CD1, employing minimalism and subtle turntable magic to produce a fine, understated piece of electronic art. This follow-up EP isn't so drastically different as to alienate fans of its predecessor, but there's a definite progression here. Once again the mood is airy and ambient and the dynamics low-key (nothing as brash as a breakbeat ever enters the sonic fray), but there's more of an emphasis on rhythm here. In addition to Pole's trademark vinyl scratches and pops, that rhythm is largely provided by sampled, echoing guitar sounds that give a strong dub undertone to many of the tracks. There's a bit more movement, both rhythmic and harmonic, but for the most part 2 still honors Pole's minimalist aesthetic in an organic and satisfying way.
