Number of the Beef Number of the Beef CD (1998)

Porn Flakes CD discography Never let it be said that the Porn Flakes don't have a taste for twisted, off-the-wall humor. The front cover of The Number of the Beef is a parody of Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast -- only instead of depicting anything having to do with the occult, it depicts a blood-covered butcher who is going after a cow. The cow, meanwhile, is holding up a sign that reads "Meat Is Murder!" Like Maiden, the Porn Flakes are a metal band. But unlike Maiden, they don't play old-school fantasy metal. Rather, this 1998 release combines rap-metal and thrash metal. In the late '90s, most rap-metal bands were playing chug-chug riffs à la Limp Bizkit, Korn, or (hed) p.e. But the Porn Flakes' riffs have more of a late-'80s/early-'90s mindset. Joey Belladonna-era Anthrax (as in pre-John Bush) is an obvious influence, and 24-7 Spyz is a valid comparison. The rapping, meanwhile, draws on hip-hop influences (both East Coast and West Coast) that include Public Enemy, Run-D.M.C., and Ice-T. "Moo Jack Rustler" is a parody of Ice-T's "New Jack Hustler," while "Unblind" references PE's "Don't Believe the Hype" -- and on a remake of Ice Cube's "What They Hittin' Foe?," the Porn Flakes demonstrate that gangsta rap lyrics can easily work in a thrash environment. The Toledo, OH, band occasionally ventures into sociopolitical territory; "Myth Amerikkka" is an angry rant that wouldn't be out of place on a Rage Against the Machine album. But overall, the Porn Flakes are more interested in goofy, over the top fun than fighting the power. Those who hold Anthrax and 24-7 Spyz's more hip-hop-minded work in high regard will find The Number of the Beef to be a fun disc that's worth checking out. ~ Alex Henderson Recorded at Audiomatrix Studios, Toledo, Ohio.
