Salesmen & Racists CD (2001)
Gayle Ritt CD discography Imagine a more testosterone-laden version of Beck with less of a surrealist bent, and you'll have a decent entry point for the debut album by Chicago singer-songwriter Ike Reilly. Admittedly, the Beck association is fueled by the fact that SALESMEN AND RACISTS is co-produced by Mickey Petralia, who has manned the boards for the aforementioned Loser King. Petrailia helps Reilly to achieve a fresh-sounding amalgam of punk-inspired energy, pop hooks, and the occasional hip-hop nod. Reilly also plays up the trailer-trash angle, as on "My Wasted Friends," whose titular subjects are celebrated over a thundering trashcan beat. Reilly's salt-of-the-earth orientation is further evidenced in the light-hearted "Hip Hop Thighs," where he namechecks the Clash and Johnny Cash. Despite all the tough-guy imagery, though, Reilly's voice is ultimately pliable enough to wrap itself around the occasional ballad, and he displays pop smarts aplenty amid the sonic bravado.
