Melaza CD (2010)
Scorch Trio discography The latest album by Scandinavian skronk-jazz outfit Scorch Trio features a new member -- drummer Paal Nilssen-Love has been replaced by Frank Rosaly -- but longtime fans of the group will hear few sharp changes from the material on their first three albums. Guitarist Raoul Björkenheim is still tearing at the strings in a way that combines free jazz and high-volume rock, while bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten locks in with whoever is drumming, setting up fusion-minded yet supple grooves where necessary, but providing plenty of space on more abstract tracks like "Orita." Some pieces, like the opening "Relajo," recall Tony Williams' Lifetime or the Trio of Doom (a very short-lived group made up of John McLaughlin, Jaco Pastorius, and Williams), while others, like the title track, sound more like the amp-frying post-blues Jimi Hendrix was recording in the last year of his life. This music will be way too abstract and jagged for fans of plain ol' hard rock, but those who've been following Björkenheim's career thus far will be pleased to know that the change of drummers hasn't cost the Scorch Trio any of its intensity. ~ Phil Freeman
Personnel: Raoul Björkenheim (guitar); Frank Rosaly (drums).

Luggumt CD (2004)
Scorch Trio songs This the second release from the trio of Raoul Björkenheim, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love (the first came out billed to their individual names and was titled Scorch Trio). Luggumt was recorded two years later (January 2004) at the same studio, with the same engineer. Understandably, it sounds pretty close to the first one, although the music is not as scorching this time; there is more room to breathe, and a higher percentage of quiet(ish) passages, including the delicate drums/bass duet "Snaekje Rojnd Naevinj." Björkenheim is ...

Brolt CD (2008)
Scorch Trio CD discography Norwegian jazz in general has long grown out of whatever perceptions or stereotypes held back wider acceptance of it in earlier years, and the New York-based Scorch Trio continues to prove this on Brolt, the group's third album, swiftly recorded in a two-day session in Oslo following the conclusion of a European tour. Raoul Björkenheim's guitar and Paal Nilssen-Love's drumming take slight precedence over Ingebrigt Håker Flaten's bass work and electronics, but this is no slight against the latter performer; his careful anchoring of the bottom end is as fluid as one could want and provides the pivot for Nilssen-Love's explosive fills ...
