Sleepytime Gorilla Museum music CDs Self-proclaimed Rock Against Rock purveyors Sleepytime Gorilla Museum create a brand of off-kilter avant-rock that borrows from Captain Beefheart, Sonic Youth, and John Zorn. Alternately ambient and thrashy, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum dash conventional expectations with a malicious glee, mixing contemporary classical's penchant for unsettling chamber music with punk's reckless energy. GRAND OPENING AND CLOSING, the band's startling debut album, is at once theoretically high-minded and chaotically in-your-face. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum includes: Carla Kihlstedt. Personnel: Nils Frykdahl (vocals, guitar, 12-string guitar, autoharp); Carla Kihlstedt (vocals, guitar, autoharp, electric violin, pump organ); Dan Rathbun (vocals, autoharp, bass guitar); Michael Mellender (guitar, harp, percussion); David Shamrock (piano, drums); Frank Grau (drums). Audio Mixer: Dan Rathbun. Recording information: Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, CA (01/06/2006); Polygraph Recording, Oakland, CA (01/06/2006). Sleepytime Gorilla Museum discography In Glorious Times' second song, "Helpless Corpses Enactment," is either straight-ahead death metal, complete with Cookie Monster growls, or an utterly straight-faced parody of same; the fact that it's well-nigh impossible to tell one way or the other pretty much sums up Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. The Oakland quintet's fourth studio album maintains all the oddball humor, technical complexity, jarring dissonance and mindbending dynamic shifts of their previous albums, not to mention their proud inability to sound like the same band from one song to the next. For example, the song directly following the aforementioned slab of death metal is the slightly pompous "Puppet Show," with passages that come close to actually quoting from familiar parts of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, and straight after that, "Formicary" is almost a pop song and "Angle of Repose," sung by violinist Carla Kihlstedt, sounds like it could be an outtake from Björk's Volta. That head-snapping eclecticism is the band's stock in trade, alongside the King Crimson-like blend of metallic aggression, artsy dissonance and flashy chops that's the throughline for all these disparate styles. So basically, those who liked Sleepytime Gorilla ...

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum songs An avant-metal spectacle of the most obscene, obese and obstinate, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum sound like a brigade of skeleton soldiers marching through post-industrial cities decorated by the finest of silken banners to cover up the decay. Singer Nils Frykdahl can croon with a baritone even deeper than Simon Bonney, with the same sense of dark philosophy, as he does on the opening "Hymn to the Morning Star." But he's just as likely to bark like James Hetfield caught up in the rush ...
