Soprano Summit music CDs Although only a part-time affair in the 1990s, Soprano Summit (now often called Summit Reunion because it uses the same six musicians who appeared on the band's initial recording in 1973) remains one of the hottest groups in jazz. The interplay between Bob Wilber (usually on soprano) and clarinetist Kenny Davern is full of joy, the rhythm section would be difficult to improve upon and the ensembles are consistently memorable and often quite exciting. For this 1995 session, the sextet mostly brings new life to a variety of Dixieland warhorses (including "Darktown Strutters' Ball," "Hindustan," and a lengthy "Somebody Stole My Gal") although Irving Berlin's "I'll See You In C-U-B-A" is a bit obscure, and the folk song "Darling Nelly Gray" has not been recorded much in a jazz setting since Louis Armstrong ...

Soprano Summit discography During the mid-'70s, an era when interest in pre-bop jazz was near its lowest, Soprano Summit was formed and somehow flourished. Co-led by Kenny Davern (on soprano, clarinet, and C-melody sax) and Bob Wilber (tripling on soprano, clarinet, and alto), the group offered strong swing-based solos, a colorful repertoire, and, best of all, exciting ensembles. This two-CD set features the 1976-1977 edition of Soprano Summit with Marty Grosz's acoustic guitar and banjo acting as a third important voice while bassist George Duvivier and either Bobby Rosengarden and Fred Stoll on drums offer suitable support. Reissued are two complete LPs and in addition there are five previously unreleased selections from a live performance, along with a 13-minute "Jazzspeak" during which Marty Grosz talks (with humor) about the history of the important group. Some of the many ...

Soprano Summit songs The music on this 1998 CD was previously out on a British CD by the obscure J&M label. Soprano Summit tended to be at its hottest live in concert and, even though they were not using their usual rhythm section (having guest guitarist Dave Cliff, bassist Peter Ind and drummer Lennie Hastings for this British concert), the co-leaders (Kenny Davern and Bob Wilber on clarinets and sopranos) sound typically heated. Actually, there are more slower tunes than usual on this set (including a beautiful opening version of "Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland" and a lengthy "Old Stock o' Lee Blues") but enough barn burners (such as "Ole Miss" and "Oh Sister, Ain't That Hot") to satisfy all Soprano Summit fans. Wilber and Davern always brought out the best in each other, making Soprano Summit (no ...

Soprano Summit CD discography While clarinetist/soprano saxophonists Kenny Davern and Bob Wilber are of the generation that produced the first wave of bebop and hard bop players, both favor earlier jazz modes of small-group swing and New Orleans-inspired hot jazz. From 1972 to 1979, Davern and Wilbur co-led Soprano Summit, a hard-swinging quintet dedicated to pre-bop styles. Recorded live in 1975 and backed by simpatico fellow travelers Marty Grosz (acoustic guitar) and George Duvivier (bass) plus inspired guest Connie Kay (drummer for the MJQ), this Summit combo goes to town on New Orleans standards and Jelly Roll Morton gems. To fill out this double-disc set, there are fine live tracks by other small groups featuring Davern and Wilber (along with trombonist Dick Wellstood and cornetist Ruby Braff, no less). Audio Mixer: Doug Pomeroy. Audio Remasterer: Doug Pomeroy. Liner Note Authors: Dan Morgenstern; ...
