Hawaii Five-O CD (2010)
Bob Spalding CD discography This 16-track compilation CD is not to be confused with the 11-track regular Ventures album Hawaii Five-O released by Liberty Records in 1969. That gold-selling LP was recorded to take advantage of the Ventures' Top Five hit with the TV theme "Hawaii Five-O," and it also contained the group's instrumental covers of other artists' hits of the period, such as "Galveston" (Glen Campbell) and "Games People Play" (Joe South). This collection shares only the title track with that album; the rest of the tunes are drawn from throughout the Ventures' recording career and focus on other efforts with surf, sea, and Hawaiian themes, including "Surf Rider" and a cover of "Pipeline" from the 1963 LP Surfing and the Ventures hit "Diamond Head" from 1964's Walk, Don't Run, Vol. 2. Covering a range of time, the music varies somewhat in musical style, with, for example, "Flower of the Sun" boasting a sitar-like sound for light psychedelia and the closer, "Truth," a hard rock feel reminiscent of Jeff Beck. Thus, the disc provides a representative sampling of the Ventures over the course of their career, even if it isn't a hits collection. ~ William Ruhlmann

A lot of the Ventures' releases have been specific to the Japanese market, and Surfin' to Baja draws on that backlist, collecting 19 originals by the band, and although these recordings were tracked at various times between ...
