Mentor CD (2003)
Kerry Strayer music CDs Baritone saxophonist Kerry Strayer's third CD, Mentor, features more of the urbane arranging for septet that he delved into on his previous outings, Why Not Now? and the Gerry Mulligan tribute Jeru Blue. Featuring the stellar alto saxophone, flute, and clarinet work of Gary Foster, the aptly titled disc is a swinging homage to Foster, with whom Strayer has been associated, either as a student or colleague, since 1976. A strong proponent of the Kansas City jazz scene, Strayer has a knack for melodic arranging ...

Speak Low CD (2002)
Kerry Strayer CD discography Begun in the spirit of the classic Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker piano-less quartet, trumpeter Rick Holland and baritone saxophonist Kerry Strayer's Speak Low is actually split between tracks sans piano and those with pianist Frank Mantooth. Longtime Midwesterners, Holland and Strayer both play in a thoughtful, laid-back style perfectly suited to such iconic "cool" jazz tunes as "Bernie's Tune" and the softly frenetic "Swing House" -- both included here. Holland especially evinces Baker's trademark minimalist approach with a supple tone and well-constructed lines that often cross ...

In Time's Shadow CD (2006)
Kerry Strayer albums The title of this set is an apt one. While much of the music presented by the Rick Holland-Evan Dobbins Little Big Band, it hearkens back -- in terms of its sophistication, confidence and outright jazz literacy, not nostalgically -- to an era when progressive jazz, and big bands (this one numbering 10 pieces) flourished on the scene. This is one sophisticated outfit. Featuring the arrangement and compositional skills of Brent Wallarab, Jim Martin, Bill Dobbins and Kerry Strayer, this band struts out the tradition ...

Jeru Blue: Tribute To Gerry Mulligan CD (1998)
Kerry Strayer music CDs Baritone saxophonist Kelly Strayer gave himself a tough challenge doing a tribute to Gerry Mulligan -- not only does he play the same instrument but he uses Jeru's last rhythm section (Ted Rosenthal, Dean Johnson, Ron Vincent) and sticks to works by Mulligan. While he couldn't possibly match the sound and feeling of Mulligan's recordings, his swinging tone is a delight. The songs chosen emphasize some of the legendary musician's lesser-known (but not lesser-quality) works; the pieces are mainly from the latter part of Mulligan's career, arranged by Strayer. The lively bossa nova "Rio One," the moody ballad "Dragonfly" and the upbeat "North Atlantic Run," with the leader's soprano sax solo, are all highlights. Trumpeter Randy Brecker, trombonist John Mosca and tenor saxophonist Ted Nash also shine in their solo spotlights. ~ Ken Dryden
