Summerland discography Many jazz and classical musicians labor under the delusion that all rock lyrics are sophomoric in nature and devoid of depth -- that rock artists are incapable of addressing complex emotions and only write songs about getting drunk and getting laid. Anyone who is that ill-informed has never listened to emocore, a style of alternative rock that is all about serious introspection. In fact, introspection is the thing that defines Overcast Days, the debut album by Long Island emocore quartet the Summerland. This CD doesn't favor mindless, frivolous escapism; a serious tone defines "Forsaken," "Day Breakdown," and other emotionally complex offerings. There is nothing wrong with frivolity or mindless escapism in rock or any other genre of music -- frivolity certainly has its place, and party music that celebrates fun and escapism (which could be anything from Kiss and Motley Crüe to the Village People) definitely serves a useful purpose. But that isn't what the Summerland does on Overcast Days; these ultra-introspective songs are about deep feelings and emotions -- specifically, feelings and emotions you're likely to have as a young adult. So a lot of Generation Xers who were young in 2000 would be able to relate to the emotions that the Summerland describes. But that isn't to say that a baby boomer who was 45 or 50 in 2000 would necessarily find the lyrics off-putting; being middle-aged doesn't mean that a person automatically forgets what he/she was feeling 20 or 30 years ago. This decent and fairly promising, if imperfect, album is worth exploring if you like your alternative rock on the introspective side. ~ Alex Henderson The Summerland is rocking Long Island by bringing a slightly different style of rock music to the table that is fresh, hot and heavy. Packed with fast furious beats, intense thumping bass thuds and blazing guitar riffs accompanied with ear pleasing melodic vocals. You can rest assured that these guys will be making an impact on the LI rock community...The Summerland does carry on a certain chapped edge which gives them their own identity. The song "Day Break Down" is a fine example of their thunderous EMO sound which offers a solid poppy hook with vicious guitars and action packed power beats that surges with energy. The band can also shift gears with songs like "Field 3" which is a much more subtle number with a catchy melody that exposes the bands more gentle, poetic side. Other songs ...
