Surgery Discography of CDs

Trim, 9th Ward High Roller Trim, 9th Ward High Roller CD (1993)
CD $14.15 Buy It  Details Extended Play
Surgery CD discography Trim, 9th Ward High Roller confirmed once and for all that Surgery was a lot different from the noisy punk rockers prevalent on Amphetamine Reptile. With their bad-boy swagger, Surgery is really an early-'70s blues-rock band stuck out of their time, far more sleazy (à la the Rolling Stones and New York Dolls) than scuzzy (as all other Amphetamine Reptile artists, who seem more rooted in Richard Hell and Sonic Youth). "Maldia" and "A.K" are thundering blooze rockers that wouldn't sound out of place on an early ZZ Top album, and with their lyrics about girls gone bad and drug deals gone sour, a listener would be forgiven for thinking they were written during the Nixon administration. Sean McDonald's voice is the key weapon here, a raspy, gritty instrument devoid of any punk affectations. Coupled with the skillful guitar of John Leamy, it gives the EP a feel unlike any other Amphetamine Reptile release. Trim, 9th Ward High Roller is an interesting standout in the Amphetamine Reptile catalog. ~ Victor W. Valdivia Recorded at Before Christ Studios, Brooklyn, New York in November 1992. Personnel: Sean McDonnell (vocals); Scott Kleber (guitar); John Leamy (drums). Recording information: Before Christ Studios, Brooklyn, NY (11/1992). Surgery: Sean McDonnell (vocals), Scott Kleber (guitar), John Lachapelle (bass), John Leamy (drums).

Surgery albums On Nationwide, it would be fairly easy to pigeonhole Surgery as yet another scabrous, noisy guitar band in the mold of other acts on the Amphetamine Reptile label (such as the Cows and Halo of Flies). And while such tuneless fare as "Mistake" would lead to such a conclusion, it would be unfair. Surgery is really the closest Amphetamine Reptile ever came to a conventional hard rock band, betraying a heavy Rolling Stones and Southern rock influence. "Caveman," a bluesy, hard-driving rocker, sounds like the best song the Stones hadn't put out in years, while "Highway 109" uses greasy, gutbucket slide guitar to create a sleazy rock sound. Of course, there's plenty of noise punk as well, such as "L-7," but even on those tracks Surgery displays a fascinating musical dexterity that gives them an edge over most Amphetamine Reptile acts. It's not Surgery's best, but it is a promising debut that helped establish one of Amphetamine Reptile's most noteworthy acts, which makes it worth a listen. ~ Victor W. Valdivia Recorded at Fun City, New York, New York. Surgery: Sean McDonnell (vocals); Scott Kleber (guitar); John Lachapelle (bass); John Leamy (drums). Additional personnel: Wharton Tiers (drums).

Surgery discography When grunge favorites Nirvana and Pearl Jam exploded commercially between 1992 and 1993, and the alternative style became rock's dominant direction for the 1990s, many major labels jumped on the alternative bandwagon and started signing an abundance of alt-rockers just as they had been flooding the market with long-haired pop-metal/hard-rock acts in the 1980s. Atlantic was no exception, and Surgery's Shimmer was among the many alternative rock releases that Atlantic put out in 1994. Not fantastic, but a generally satisfying, if uneven album, Shimmer ranges from forceful to moody. Surgery's more aggressive and intense side asserts itself on such punk-influenced, hard-rocking items as "Vibe Out," "D-Nice," and "Bootywhack," but the CD takes a much moodier and more shadowy turn on "Low Cut Blues" and "No. 1 Pistola." Despite being decent most of the ...
