Live at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal Live at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal CD (2003)

Systemwide albums Recorded live at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Montreal, Canada in July 2002. Fans of modern dub and experimental reggae who have not yet had the good fortune to see Portland, Oregon's Systemwide perform live now can at least get a general idea of what they're missing with this fine live recording made at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal in July of 2002. Since even in the studio the band focuses on performing live without using MIDI or sequencing, its cohesion and sense of groove are almost unshakeable; yet interestingly, the group's sound comes across as a bit cooler and more relaxed in this live setting than in the studio. Highlights of Live at the Festival de Jazz de Montreal include a great rendition of "Dub Plate" (originally heard on the Pure and Applied album), which features a sharp aggro groove under a laid-back melodica part, and the exquisite "Réclame," which should be used as a master class in the practice of live dub. It includes tastefully rendered samples of Dennis Brown vocals and some fine French singing by band vocalist Ezra Ereckson. Also worth mentioning is the slow and darkly swinging "Gilgamesh," which closes the program. If you must choose between this album and Systemwide's studio work, the studio material is probably the best place to start. But no fan should hesitate to pick this one up as well. ~ Rick Anderson Personnel: Ezra (vocals, melodica, percussion). Recording information: Festival International De Jazz De Montreal At The (07/07/2002); Scene Du Maurier, Montreal, Quebec, Canada (07/07/2002). Photographer: Terrance Harrison.

Systemwide CD discography The long-awaited full-length follow-up to 1997's Sirius LP finds Systemwide moving away from the electronica and North African influences of 2000's Osmani Stepper EP and back to their dub and reggae roots. While electronic sounds are certainly central to Systemwide's overall approach, ...

Systemwide albums The only bad thing about this exquisite chunk of experimental dub is its brevity; the three mixes of the title track (two by labelmates Alpha & Omega) and three new compositions go by all too quickly, leaving a blissful memory of haunting, bone-deep base lines, slightly disturbing tape manipulations, and juddering one-drop drums. "Osmani Stepper" is a great tune, drawing inspiration, as you might expect, from various Islamic ...

Systemwide CD discography It's been three years of wandering in the commercial desert since Dr. Israel's last album, and now he's back, bursting with righteous anger, multicultural inspiration, and rhythmic power. While he hasn't left experimental jungle behind completely (check out the remastered and extended reissue of his 1999 classic Inna City Pressure, also released on ROIR in 2005), Patterns of War stays mostly in a slower, darker reggae groove -- ...
