Tayo music CDs Functional Breaks release their sixth CD in March 2004 named after the labels sister club night 'Beatz & Bobz'. Now in its 8th year 'Beatz & Bobz' is one of the longest running Breaks monthlies in the UK and has had just about all the top UK breaks DJs play at some point. Beatz & Bobz have built up a national profile after hosting one of the nights on Glastonbury Festival's 'Glade Stage' for the last three years as well as tours in the US and Europe and hosting tents at the Lizard Festival in Cornwall to 'Breaknation' in Seville Spain and more recently hosting the breaks tent at The Glade Festival. Tayo songs DJ Tayo has been a force to be reckoned with in the London underground club scene since he helped to midwife the breakbeat movement. His contribution to the Fabriclive series finds him happily blurring the boundaries that separate house, dubstep, breakbeat, baile funk, and techno while maintaining a constant undercurrent of bass-heavy dub running throughout the proceedings. The first half of this album is absolutely brilliant: Acid Rockers' "Dread Cowboy" and Loot & Pillage's "The Curse" are mixed together to create a nasty funk-dub medley, which quickly segues into some lovely and light-footed dancehall reggae courtesy of Ursula 1000 Ft. and Sista Widey, which is then followed by some bubbling Braziliana from Undersound. The complex Latin funk of Buraka Som Sistema's "Com Reispeito" leads into some more Jamaican dancehall from Aquasky and the Ragga Twins, but then things get a little bit soft. The remainder of the album is lots of fun, but doesn't quite meet the standard set during the first half of the program. The nifty vocal manipulations on "Jump," by Buckfunk 3000, come close to jump-starting the proceedings again, but Marc Adamo and Elemental both contribute rather pedestrian ...
