Tribute to Hamp CD (2004)
Duane Thamm albums All too often, great jazz musicians have died much too young. That is true of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Booker Little, and Fats Navarro, and is equally true of everyone from Clifford Brown to Jaco Pastorius to the seminal Charlie "Bird" Parker. But Lionel Hampton, thankfully, wasn't among the jazz greats who died in his twenties or thirties; the vibist/bandleader was 94 when he died of heart failure on August 31, 2002. Hampton not only lived a very long life -- he also lived an amazingly productive life. One of the Hampton tributes that has been recorded since his death is Tribute to Hamp, which finds Chicago vibist Duane ...

Where or When CD (1999)
Duane Thamm music CDs Teamed with a veteran crew of Chicago musicians and technicians, Eugenia Elliott presents a set of very safe standards sung in a very safe manner. There's no risk-taking, and no clever arrangements or other improvisational techniques to liven up the proceedings. On numbers where she is joined by the larger group, they seem both physically and artistically distant. Her sweet-sounding voice is much better served on songs where she is accompanied by just a rhythm section (or even less). The songs "Skylark," with just pianist Bobby Schiff, "I'll Be Seeing You" with guitarist Dave Baney and "The More I See You" (with the quartet of Schiff, Jim Cox on bass, Charlie Braugham on drums and Baney on guitar) are the most effective pieces on this album. The title song is done chamber-music style to good effect. The remaining cuts are pretty much routine and unimaginative renditions of oft-recorded standards. Elliott's pitch and intonation stray from time to time, detracting from what is otherwise a very pleasant voice. Hopefully, time and experience will cure that. ~ Dave Nathan
