Ulu music CDs A prominent fixture in the Northeast's funk/jazz scene, amongst bands such as Addison Groove Project and Topaz, ulu has developed a dedicated fan base through relentless touring for over half of a decade. After a few line-up changes ulu is as tight as they've ever been, as showcased in Nerve, the New York City quartet's fourth release. Nerve features a collection of artistic and creative arrangements, ranging from neck-breaking funk to lounge jazz. "Where's Paul" kicks off the album with a taste of 70's funk, led by keyboardist Scott Chasolen. Chasolen's dynamic organ playing has garnered ulu comparisons to Medeski, Martin and Wood, but it's the tenor sax playing by Aaron Gardner coupled with interesting bass lines by Brian Killeen on songs such as "Rollin'" and "Slinky," that help separate ulu from the rest of the pack. While the members of ulu are obviously very proficient at their instruments, it's their use of space and restraint in their songs such as "All You Can Eat" that provide a refreshing change of pace that's often hard to find in improvisational/instrumental bands. The rocking "Bovine Confines" showcases Josh Dion's fiery drumming behind energetic horn ...

Ulu discography The second album by ulu is a strong collection of fusion jams that genre hops with a fluidity most bands would be very jealous of. When the band is on, it is absolutely smoking. The dueling interplay between multi-instrumentalist Scott Chasolen and saxophonist Aaron Gardner makes "Jitterfried" a compelling listen. The snappy percussion and tight instrumentation of "Mouthlove" spills over with tension as the song bounces all over the place. And "Prince Igor" is the centerpiece of the album, an amazing live jam that travels all over the musical map. It moves from funk to space rock to smooth jazz to psychedelic noodling but, because of its continual shaping and evolving, it turns out to be a fantastic sonic journey that pays off in the end. The only real shame is that most of the best material is at the end of the album, so the first few tracks become fairly forgettable when matched up against the later material. The intense lounge jazz of "Scab" is not bad, but it lacks the energy that the album should have at the beginning, and the same goes for the entertaining but otherwise overlong "XG10." Still, this is ...

Ulu songs For a long time New York City has been a breeding ground for young and creative people in which to gather, share ideas, and explore new directions in music and other arts. The funk-groove-jazz jam-group known as ulu is no exception to this tradition. Their self-titled album is infused with an energy and a vivaciousness quite obviously a product of the youth involved with the recording. But unlike some works created by other musicians in that 20-something age bracket, ulu exhibits a tightness in execution, a clarity of musical concepts, and a serious groove that quickly and effortlessly brings the listener into the cut. This phenomenon is exemplified in the opening title "Canine Brigade," which starts with Scott Chasolen spanking out some slick lines on the Clavinet that immediately inspire your head to nod to the beat. Aaron Gardner comes in with a blaring solo while the rest of the band supports the rhythm and adds sonic frosting to the mix. Luca Benedetti adds a rock-like feel to "The Grape" with his intentionally distorted and anxious guitar part, but the track settles back into the horn led melodies as the album continues. "Spongebath" will get ...
